They said they actually made using it difficult so YOU wouldn’t be able to figure it out. Yes, YOU!
I read an article that claimed Snapchat intentionally made it challenging to figure out, so the “older crowd” would get weeded out. Wait, WHAT?? Um, older crowd meaning ME (non-millennials)! NOT COOL. But it’s okay. I conquered it, and I LOVE it (I’m jencykphoto, let’s meet).
Since I’m a photographer, I know you’re used to seeing my professional Orange County photos (and if you haven’t done YOUR session with me yet, what are you waiting for? Contact me NOW to make it happen). But with Snapchat, it’s completely different.
Now my love for Snapchat didn’t happen overnight. I would open the app, not be able to figure out the point, or know what to do. Close it for months, then try again. Always getting no where. But one day, I decided I didn’t want to be one of those people who can’t adapt to change or learn new things. So I had my 19 year old niece teach me everything she knows (and she’s your ultimate Snapchat user, so she knows it all). And, BOOM! In love.
Now, it’s your turn! Let’s start with the top three reasons why I love Snapchat {and why you will too}.
1. IT’S RAW
When Instagram began, it was absolutely raw, real life. But as it developed, it became a gallery of beautiful visuals. Is this bad? Not at all. But I’ll be honest, there are so many things I want to put up. But I don’t, because it doesn’t match. There, I said it. If it doesn’t fit my brand, my colors, my life themes, I don’t want it up there. Eeeeeeeeeeeek, are we still friends? I’m just being honest, geez. ;)
Snapchat is the opposite. As of now, it doesn’t offer any filters or photo editors to make your pictures anything other than true life. It has fun filters and tools, but you can’t fake perfection from them. So what you see and what you create, is what you get. And honestly, I love it. I can share more, show you what’s really going on, and that my life, just like yours, isn’t a beautiful gallery of perfection.
So instead of seeing this usual gorgeousness…
You’ll look at this excitement…
2. COMPETITION, GONE
With Snapchat, you can’t see who follows your friends. You can’t see how many views they have. You can’t see how many likes and comments they have. And of course on the flip side, people can’t see anything about you, other than your story. I feel like this takes away the entire element of non sense that exists on Instagram & Facebook. Now it’s up to you to share relevant, fun, and interesting content. And you can’t judge it by likes and comments. I LOVE this.
So while it makes my heart happy when you comment and like my newborn and family pictures, it’s also kind of fun to have no idea what you’re thinking. 
3. LIFE, IN REAL TIME
As much as I tried to run from it, I can’t. We live in a world where immediate gratification and results are what we all have come to expect. Because of Snapchat, gone are the days of finding my perfect picture, editing it, and sharing it a day or two later. Anything that you share through Snapchat is created and shared immediately. No saving it for later. No making it perfect. No making it anything other than what it is. So basically, no faking it. Real life, real time.
For me, this means posting a quick video of the gorgeous kids I’m creating pictures of, at that exact moment. Or sharing stunning scenery from one of the many beaches I’m spending some time at. The possibilities are endless!
